Biography

"Registering as a nurse in 1986, Julie worked in the UK, Saudi Arabia and Australia as an intensive care and specialist cardiothoracic nurse. She gained critical care expertise of bullet, blast and burns injuries from the civil war in the Yemen in 1994 and the Bali bombings in 2002. Julie worked in oncology, stroke and cardiovascular clinical trials from 2005. Moving into the university sector as an academic in 2009, Julie completed a Grad. Cert in Advanced Nursing Practice in 2011 and PhD in July 2015. She was awarded Central Queensland University (CQU) Thesis Academic Excellence Award for meritorious achievements for a doctorate. Julie’s thesis examined how the curriculum prepares nursing students for workplace adversity and she is now an associate PhD supervisor exploring stress and resilience in paramedic students. She is also the principal supervisor for the project on risk assessment in polypharmacy in community dwelling older adults. Julie’s post-doctoral research involves partnering with Nambour Hospital doctors and pharmacists to explore the factors leading to medication errors in community-dwelling older people that result in admission to hospital. This USC/Nambour Hospital research collaboration is supported by an USC/Wishlist Collaborative Research Grant and aims to use the information collected to build on good practice and drive innovative in discharge planning and help to prevent medication error in the community: http://mysunshinecoast.com.au/news/news-display/study-of-at-home-medication-errors-gains-grant,44055 Julie is currently a project team member on a USC Internal Enhancement Learning and Teaching Grant involved in mapping and evaluating the ‘flipped classroom’ teaching approach at USC, and a member of an International Collaborative Writing Group preparing for publication on Flipped Learning approaches. Julie is currently a board member and counselor for the Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) Honor Society for Nurses, Phi-Delta-at-Large chapter in Australia, providing networking and leadership to members using knowledge, scholarship and research to improve global health."
