Phyllis Araneo

Biography

"Phyllis Araneo began working at USC in 2002 with a background based in the visual arts. Her career includes art directing, graphic arts management and portrait painting in the New York Metropolitan area. Inspired by nature, her art has been reproduced on prints, cards and homewares. A Master of Creative Arts degree explored the resurgence in contemporary culture of an iconic art image representing humanity’s relationship with the natural environment. The study, published as a book in 2010 by VDM Verlag, analysed the messages conveyed by the image as it reappeared through history as well as investigated how visual information can transform thought and invoke action within societies. Phyllis also holds a Master of Education degree and is qualified in training and assessment. Phyllis’ current research is focused on pedagogical evaluation and optimisation of learning outcomes in education for environmental sustainability. Phyllis is specifically interested in how increased understanding of science can enhance environmentally responsible behaviour in the citizenry. Phyllis possesses deep passion for encouraging and developing an individual’s understanding of our relationship with the natural world and the value of our natural resources. She has particular interest in the role individual and social responsibility has in manifesting our ecologically sustainable futures."
