Biography
Professor Owen Ung is a breast cancer surgeon and also specialises in endocrine surgery which includes thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal conditions. He is a committed clinician, researcher and teacher and lectures and publishes widely. He is a principle investigator for a number of major Australian and New Zealand clinical trials relating to the management of the axilla and regional nodes in breast cancer. Through the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, he plays an active role in surgical training, assessment and examination. After graduating from the University of Queensland, he worked in rural and metropolitan hospitals throughout the state then completed his advanced surgical training at the Royal Brisbane Hospital. From there he undertook a fellowship at Westmead Hospital in NSW then at the University of Wales College of Medicine in the UK as a lecturer in surgery. From 1995 to 2008 he has was a consultant surgeon at Westmead Hospital where he headed the Breast and Endocrine Surgical Unit and was Director of the department of general surgery. He obtained a Clinical Associate Professorship with the University of Sydney. From the beginning of 2009 he returned to Queensland to head the Breast and Endocrine unit at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and join the academic department of surgery of the University of Queensland.
