Biography
Plotkin is a vital contributor to immunology and the protection of millions of people as the developer of the rubella vaccine now in standard use throughout the world, and as the co-developer of the recently approved pentavalent rotavirus vaccine. He has also made significant achievements in the development and application of critically necessary immunizations including anthrax, oral polio, rabies, varicella, and cytomegalovirus. Dr. Plotkin is the author of the current standard medical reference “Vaccines”, now in its 6th edition. Until 1991, he was Professor of Pediatrics and Microbiology at the University of Pennsylvania, Professor of Virology at the Wistar Institute and at the same time, Director of Infectious Diseases and Senior Physician at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. In 1991, Dr. Plotkin left the University to join the vaccine manufacturer, Pasteur-Mérieux-Connaught, now Sanofi Pasteur, Marnes-la-Coquette, France, as Medical and Scientific Director. He is now consultant to vaccine manufacturers, biotechnology companies and non-profit research organizations as principal of Vaxconsult, LLC. Plotkin’s thought leadership continues to advise and influence clinical practice, academia, immunization policy and the life sciences industry. He is currently Emeritus Professor of the University of Pennsylvania, and Adjunct Professor of the Johns Hopkins University.
