Biography
Janusz Cofala was a participant in the IIASA 1980 Young Scientists Summer Program. He returned to the Institute in March 1992 to join the Transboundary Air Pollution Project, now Air Quality and Greenhouse Gases (AIR) Program to work on energy, emissions, and costs modules of the RAINS model. His current responsibilities include the development of emission scenarios of air pollutants for the world, with particular focus on Europe, China and Southeast Asia. Additionally, he is involved in the assessment of potentials and costs for energy efficiency improvement in buildings, the manufacturing industry and in the energy sector for the needs of the integrated assessment model GAINS. Dr. Cofala studied mechanical engineering and energy economics at the Silesian University of Technology, Gliwice, Poland, where he received his MA (1971), PhD (1975), and Dr.Sc. -habilitation (1986) degrees. In 1976 Dr. Cofala joined the Polish Academy of Sciences, Institute for Fundamental Technological Research (IFTR), where he was Associate Professor and head of the Energy Systems Group. There he was responsible for projects on modeling energy supply and demand and interactions of energy systems with the economy and the environment. Between 1988 and 1994 Dr. Cofala served as a consultant to the World Bank, the EBRD and international consulting companies on several energy and environment related studies and projects. He was also an adviser to the Polish Ministry of Industry on energy policy issues and a member of the Steering Group of the Polish Committee of the World Energy Council. He is a member of the editorial advisory board of the International Journal of Climate Change Strategies and Management and serves as a reviewer to journals like Atmospheric Environment, Environmental Science & Technology, and Energy Policy.
Research Interest
His current research interests include the development of emission scenarios of air pollutants for the world.
