Biography
Laixiang Sun is a senior researcher and economist with the Water (WAT) Program at IIASA. He is also a Professor at the Department of Geographical Sciences, University of Maryland, USA; a Research professor at the Department of Financial and Management Studies, School of Oriental and African Studies, the University of London; a visiting research professor at the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research (IGSNRR) and China Center for Agricultural Policy (CCAP), Chinese Academy of Sciences; and a senior research fellow at the Guanghua School of Management at Peking University, China. Professor Sun has been a principal investigator and/or leading scientist in a number of research projects sponsored by the European Commission; the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), the British Academy, the Royal Academy of Engineering, and the Royal Society in the UK; the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in the USA; the Chinese Academy of Sciences and National Natural Sciences Foundation in China. He was a core team member and senior researcher in the State System Reform Commission's priority project: A program for China's economic institutional reform in 1988-95, which won the Sun Yefang prize in economics in 1988, awarded by the China Society of Economics. Prof. Sun received his PhD in economics in 1997 from the International Institute of Social Studies of the Erasmus University Rotterdam in the Hague, and his MSc (1985) and BSc (1982) in mathematics from Peking University.
Research Interest
His areas of interest includes regional sciences and regional economics, climate change mitigation and adaptation, integrated modelling and applied systems analysis, spatial economics and econometrics, ecological economics and development economics, international business studies.
