Biography

Shaohui Zhang is an IIASA Postdoctoral Research Scholar with IIASA's Air Quality and Greenhouse Gases (AIR) and Energy (ENE) programs. His research interests focus on understanding of key issues regarding energy & resource efficiency, energy transitions, climate change, air pollution, industrial and technological development, technology assessment and policy evaluation, synergies between policies, and multiple benefits/co-benefits of energy efficiency. At IIASA, he plans to explore the co-benefits of energy efficiency improvement and emission mitigation of air pollutants in China, and to quantify the environmental and public health impacts of pollution by developing a new model tool. Dr. Zhang received his PhD in Science, Technology, and Environmental Policy from Utrecht University, the Netherlands, and his MSc in Environmental Science from Zhengzhou University, China. During his PhD studies, he worked on subjects related to industrial energy efficiency, greenhouse gas emission reduction, air quality and public health, with a main focus on the cement and iron and steel industries in China at various scales. Between April and June 2013, Dr. Zhang participated in IIASA's AIR program as an assistant research, where he was involved in the GAINS model for the analysis of the energy saving and emission mitigation potential of Chinese industry. In June 2016, he completed his PhD thesis on energy efficiency for clean air - capturing the multiple benefits for climate, air quality, and public health in China. Following this, he worked as a guest researcher at the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development at Utrecht University in the Netherlands.
