Research Interest

My laboratory focuses on cytotoxic damage in the model of peritoneal dialysis (PD). We describe and manipulate the cellular stress response in different in-vitro and in-vivo models of experimental PD, allowing improved cellular survival. Using systems-biology approaches we showed that stress responses in PD were not adequate for sufficient cytoprotection. In cooperation with the MedUni Vienna spin-off Zytoprotec, novel therapeutic interventions are developed in order to re-establish adequate cellular repair mechanism. Parallel to basic research we perform clinical research on the optimization of therapy for pediatric kidney transplantations and dialysis. Translational and clinical-epidemiological studies led to the establishment of an interdisciplinary working group that brought improvements in the quality of our daily clinical care. All junior researchers are participating in the N790 PhD program POeT (Program for Organfailure-, replacement and Transplantation, link: http://www.meduniwien.ac.at/poet/en/poet/description.php).
