The Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) is Austria's central non-university institution for science and research. It has the legal task of "promoting science in every respect". Founded in 1847 as a scholarly society, with its more than 770 members and around 1,600 employees, it stands for innovative basic research, interdisciplinary knowledge exchange and the imparting of new knowledge - with the goal of contributing to scientific and societal progress.
