Sumith R Panicker

Professor
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology
Union University
Bahamas

Biography

Sumith R Panicker received his PhD in Cellular and Molecular Cardiology from Sri Chitra Medical Center (SCTIMST) under the mentorship of renowned cardiac pathologist Dr CC Kartha. Here he explored why patients with diabetes have increased risk for cardiovascular diseases. Subsequently he joined the laboratory of world-renowned scientist Dr Rodger McEver at Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, USA. Here he elucidated whether adhesion molecules circulating in plasma are prothrombotic and proinflammatory causing cardiovascular diseases. Currently he is exploring the anti-inflammatory properties of anti-coagulant proteins in Dr Ray Rezaie’ lab. The long-term goal is to better understand leukocyte-endothelial interactions, develop novel therapeutic strategies to attenuate and regress atherosclerotic plaques/atherothrombosis and the consequent heart attacks and stroke. Research Interest

Luekocyte-endothelial/platelet interactions in normal and diseased settings. How anti-coagulant proteins mediate their anti/pro-inflammatory effects.
