Biography

Dr Brittney Shea Herbert is currently an Associate Professor of Medical and Molecular Genetics and Pharmacology and Toxicology at the Indiana University School of Medicine.She is  a Member of the Indiana University IU Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center and a Member of the Center for Regenerative Biology and Medicine.  Dr.  Herbert obtained her B A and PhD degrees in Biological Sciences with a focus on nutrition and cancer from the University of Texas at Austin.   Dr. Herbert then performed postdoctoral research on telomeres and telomerase under the tutelage of Drs. Jerry Shay and Woodring Wright at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas Department of Cell Biology.   Among Dr. Herbert’s honors, some are a NASA Graduate Student Research Fellowship, a Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Fellowship, a DOD Breast Cancer Research Program Postdoctoral Fellowship and numerous grants awarded for research in breast cancer. Research Interest

Dr. Herbert’s current research interests are the role of telomeres and telomerase in aging and cancer, with particular interests in cancer progression, inherited breast cancers, novel cancer therapeutic agents as well as preclinical models for cancer research.  One of the oligonucleotide telomerase inhibitors investigated by Dr. Herbert’s laboratory is currently in clinical trials for cancer, including a breast cancer clinical trial at the IU Simon Cancer Center.
