Biography

Md. Mizanur Rahman (born in 1973) is a professor in the Department of Geography and Environment at Jahangirnagar University, Dhaka, Bangladesh where he has been a faculty member since 2001. Professor Rahman graduated with his BSc (honours) and MSc (thesis) in Geography and Environment from Jahangirnagar University, Dhaka, Bangladesh in 1996 and 1997 respectively. Later he completed his MSc in Urban Environmental Management (MUE) from Wageningen University and Research Centre, The Netherlands, in 2006. Afterwards, he was awarded with his PhD in Social Sciences and Health from Durham University, UK in 2012.   Professor Rahman’s core research interest focuses on the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) in urban informal/low-income settlements. Currently, he teaches undergraduate, graduate and MPhil/PhD level students and his teaching interest goes to Urban Geography, Urban Systems, Geography of Housing and Shelter, Tools and Techniques in Disaster Management, Research Methodology, Environmental Science and Management, Anthropogeography and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) courses. Apart from his classroom teaching, he has been supervising a number of undergraduate, graduate, MPhil and PhD level research students on water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) as well as different disaster management, urban development, and environmental management related issues. He also developed his expertise in assessing sustainable sanitation technologies, governance as well as strategic options for WASH related project planning, implementation and associated disaster management. Over the years, he has been engaged in national and international-level WASH-related research and consultancy assignments run by UN agencies, international development organizations and NGOs in Bangladesh.
