Biography
Katerina obtained her B.S.c.in Applied Biology and Biopharmaceutical Science in 2014 at Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology. Whereby her studies encompassed opportunistic pathogens and the use of microorganisms in biopharmaceutical industries, focusing largely on DNA isolation protocols, the effectiveness of the natural remedies versus antibiotics for treatment of E.coli infections and toxicity tests as a measure of the effect of substances discharged to the aquatic environment. Katerina is member of the Environmental Science Association of Ireland (ESAI), Chemical & Molecular microbial biotechnology research group (CHIMERA), Controlled Environment Laboratory for Life Sciences Research Group (CELLS), and Internationalisation Sub-committee of the academic council at LIT. Having had a previous post at City Analysts Limited in Shannon performing culturing and toxicity testing of the Algae such as Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata, Skeletonema costatum, Chlorella, and other algal species. As of 2014 she is involved in a research project “Smart Algae” which evaluates the most suitable and effective methods for carotenoids extraction.
