Biography
Dr. Niamh Stephens received a BSc (Honours) degree in Industrial Microbiology from University College Dublin. After this she obtained her PhD from the School of Biomedical and Biomolecular Science in UCD, whereby her research focused on producing alternative analogues of amphotericin B through genetic engineering of the producer organism and soil bacterium Streptomyces nodosus. For the purpose of her investigation, altering the glycosylation was the main target to produce novel analogues. Dr Stephens is now a Postdoctoral Researcher with Shannon ABC focusing on the natural products produced by the ancient tree Ginkgo biloba. Ginkgo biloba extracts are well known dietary supplements taken worldwide. Niamh is looking at other potential applications of Ginkgo biloba.
