Research Interest
My main research interest is the 3-dimensional nature of blood flow dynamics. My original work has shown that blood spirals as it is ejected from the heart and this flow pattern is potentiated down the arterial tree. This results in stablisation of the laminar flow profile and has a direct impact on medical device design and also in the nature of heart failure A second area of interest is changing the Health Services approach to outcomes and responsibility and I have published on new ways to improve outcomes within the clinical environment. This has centered on increasing the reflective practice available and required (with respect to surgery) for individual clinicians and institutions. This approach has been seen as highly successful in bringing about change within the NHS in Scotland.
