Biography
Craig McIlhenny is a consultant urological surgeon working in NHS Forth Valley in Scotland. He has a subspecialty interest in the endourological management of urinary stone disease and malignant ureteric obstruction. His higher surgical training was in the West of Scotland with fellowship training at John Hopkins in baltimore and UCL medical centre in California. He has a special interest in human factors and patient safety. He sits on the RCSEd Patient Safety Board and is on the core faculty of the Non-Technical Skills for Surgeons (NOTSS) course. He is a trained Team Resource Management Instructor and has provided human factors and team training for operating surgical teams, ICU teams, H@N teams and others both in the UK and abroad.
Research Interest
He also has a major interest in surgical education and training. He is currently Surgical Director of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, a Faculty set up specifically to enhance the role of surgical training and the surgical trainer. He has just produced the first set of standards for surgical Trainers which have been adopted by the Joint Committee on Surgical Training and approved by the GMC. He has an interest in simulation in surgical training and sits of the Scottish Surgical Simulation collaborative, where he heads up the faculty development program.
