Biography
Jim has a background in Nursing now spanning some 40 years. Enlisting as a Nurse trainee in the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1972, Jim retired from the Active List in 1996 as a Senior Nursing Officer, (Major), having served in Military Hospitals, Medical Centres and Field Medical Units in UK, North West Europe and North America with operational tours in Northern Ireland, Croatia and the Balkans. Since retiring from the Military, Jim has worked in a variety of senior nursing roles in the NHS in Northern England and Scotland including Specialist Nurse roles in Diabetes, Cardiology and Respiratory Nursing. As a consequence of this he developed clinical trial experience and an interest in Clinical Research associated with the prevention and management of Long Term Conditions. Having gained Research Management experience in clinical roles with industry leaders AstraZeneca and Quintiles, Jim then took up a Research Nurse Facilitator post in Tayside Medical Sciences Centre, (TASC), where he led on the management of Commercial Clinical Trial Feasibility activity within NHS Tayside / University of Dundee and also on the development of expertise within the Commercial Research Approvals team in TASC in the costing of Clinical Trials using the Nationally approved Industry Costing Template. Latterly Jim has taken up the post of Clinical Trial Manager for the GUT Group’s multicentre ViaDUCT Study, (Can Vitamin D supplementation improve Hepatitis C cure rates), covering 8 sites across Scotland and with some additional time being given over to supporting the Gut Group in a range of other research activities.
