Biography
Professor Jovanovic has obtained his MD/PhD degrees from the University of Belgrade. He has received his postdoctoral training at the Mayo Clinic where he was later appointed as Instructor of Medicine. In 1999 he joined the University of Dundee where he progressed through the ranks to Chair. Professor Jovanovic has published in many well-recognised peer-reviewed journals and his research was/is funded by mainstream funding bodies in UK and USA. He is a member of editorial boards of seven peer-reviewed journals and ad hoc referee for ~30 scientific journals and funding bodies.
Research Interest
The main research focus of Professor Jovanovic is on understanding signalling pathways that may protect cells and tissues against ischaemia and other types of metabolic stresses. The idea is that a better understanding of these pathways would provide a bases for novel, more efficient, therapeutic strategies against ischaemia and diseases such as intrauterine growth restriction, brain damage during foetal life, stroke, myocardial infarction and others. To achieve these goals, Professor Jovanovic has adopted a multidisciplinary approach involving molecular biology, biochemistry, electrophysiology, in vitro and in vivo physiology and pharmacology. He hopes that, in collaboration with his colleagues from the University of Dundee and abroad, it would be possible to establish better therapy against many diseases and conditions associated with ischaemia and other types of metabolic stresses.
