Research Interest
Research output reflects a range of interests, with over sixty publications on diverse topics. With colleagues in Dundee he has used a record-linkage approach to address a range of specific questions, e.g. defining the association between raised triglycerides and pancreatitis, examining the effectiveness of statins in a 'real-world' setting, assessing the impact of eGFR reporting on prescribing. As SSC Convenor he has spearheaded SSC initiatives both locally and nationally. Outputs include a series of papers and a chapter on SSCs in the Oxford Textbook of Medical Education. A third strand of activity relates to reflex and reflective ("add-on") testing, a neglected area of biochemical practice. Finally, he maintains links with investigators at the EarlyBird Study in Plymouth, specifically focusing on what can be learnt from studies of gender differences in insulin resistance in childhood. The title of his MD thesis was "Gender differences in insulin resistance in prepubertal British children."
