Biography
Lysa Owen was educated in Belfast before studying medicine (MBChB) at The University of Dundee. After a clinical career in Emergency Medicine (MRCEM) in Tayside and Sydney, Australia, she joined the university as a clinical educator in the undergraduate medical program. She is based in the clinical skills centre. She is passionate about teaching useful skills to medical students and helping them learn effectively. She currently maintains her own clinical skills by doing weekly clinics in medicine for the elderly. Her areas of interest include simulation in healthcare education, qualitative research methodologies, widening access and participation, and raising awareness of issues around human trafficking. She has completed a Professional Doctorate in Education (D.Ed.).
Research Interest
Thesis entitled “An exploration of motivation, relevance and realism in simulation based medical education: ‘I don’t want to look like an idiot’” for the award of Professional Doctorate in Education. The thesis was completed in addition to my teaching and clinical responsibilities and used a mixed method approach which explores learner motivation and barriers to engagement with simulation based medical education. Key underpinning theories are Self-determination theory (Ryan & Deci), and Domains of Realism in Simulation (Dieckmann)
