Biography

I trained in Infectious Diseases in Birmingham and completed an MD at the University of London before coming to Dundee in 1980. I held a Wellcome Trust Fellowship at Tufts New England Medical Centrefrom 1984-5. I was appointed to a NASCA Senior Lectureship in Clinical Pharmacology and Infectious Diseases at the University of Dundee in 1986. My research currently focuses on improving the quality and safety of medical care, particularly on improving antibiotic stewardship and infection management. I have over thirty years of experience in research focused on the outcomes of antimicrobial chemotherapy and the relationships between prescribing and resistance. I am the lead author for the Cochrane Systematic Review of Interventions to Improve Antibiotic Prescribing Practice for Hospital Inpatients. I am Education Secretary of the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy and was President from 2006-9.

Research Interest

My research interests lie mainly in antibiotic stewardship, ranging from observational studies of the impact of resistance on outcomes of infection to intervention studies to measure the intended and unintended consequences of antibiotic policy change in primary and secondary care. My research is mainly quantitative and uses routine data with record linkage to conduct Interrupted Time Series studies. I have over 30 years of experience in applying economic evaluation to studies of infectious disease. I have been involved in the establishment and development of the Scottish Patient Safety Research Network (SPSRN) which seeks to provide opportunities for Patient Safety Research throughout Scotland.
