Biography

Susan’s professional background is in adult nursing, including post registration training in intensive care in Bloomsbury College of Nursing in London.  During the time she was in clinical nursing she was actively involved with the British Association of Critical Care Nursing (BACCN) representing Tayside at a national level, regarding the clinical and professional interests of nurses in intensive care.  She developed an interest in education whilst working in intensive care, and has since spent the majority of her career as a teacher initially in the NHS, in Service Development/Specialist Nursing posts and in Resuscitation Training.  She was Scottish Regional Representative to the Resuscitation Council (UK) for Advanced Life support courses, and participated on national working groups and as a representative of the British Heart Foundation in Scotland, successfully securing grants from the latter to appoint trainee teaching staff in NHS Tayside.        Susan has been employed with the School of Medicine since 2002, initially with responsibility for the development and delivery of aspects of the acute care theme of the undergraduate curriculum, as well as being invited to deliver similar teaching in the Schools of Dentistry and Nursing.   She has considerable experience of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and assessment, in particular using simulation in a clinical skills environment, and more recently has become increasingly involved in the development and delivery of post graduate education modules as part of the Centre for Medical Education and Kuwait Scotland Education portfolios.  Education research interests include the use of simulation in the undergraduate medical curriculum, and a NES funded project exploring the use of mobile simulation in remote and rural Scotland.       Susan has experience of teaching internationally through collaborations with the Scotland Malawi Anaesthesia project, a project designed to support and deliver clinical update courses to multidisciplinary clinical staff in Anaesthesia, Obstetrics and Paediatrics in Malawi.  She had input into teaching adult and paediatric acute care and resuscitation skills to course attendees, and in particular supported the program of teaching and mentoring of the Malawian Clinical Officers attending the TOTT (Training of The Trainers) course preparing them to undertake a teaching role.
