Biography
Dr. Michael den Herder holds a PhD in Forest Sciences (2003) from the University of Eastern Finland and a MSc in Biology (1997) from the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. He is an expert in ecology of herbivorous mammals and plant-animal interactions. He has an extensive background on bio-energy, biodiversity and ecological research. Before joining EFI, he worked as a researcher at the School of Forest Sciences of the University of Eastern Finland. There he participated in several project on the ecological impact of large herbivores, small mammals, forest management and forest fires. At EFI, he has been working on a Sustainability Impact Assessment on the production and use of forest biomass for energy in North Karelia. At the moment he is working on a COST foresight study on the future demand for forest-based products and services
