Biography

  Dr. Robert John Herbold, Ph.D., also known as Bob is the Managing Director of The Herbold Group LLC. Dr. Herbold was an Operating Partner of Thoma Bravo Private Equity. He served as an Investment Professional of Thoma Bravo, LLC. He served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Microsoft Corp., from November 1994 to April 2001. From 2001 to June 2003, Dr. Herbold served part time for Microsoft Corporation as Executive Vice President assisting in the government, industry and customer areas. Prior to joining Microsoft in 1994, he served as Senior Vice President of Advertising and Information Services at Procter & Gamble Company from 1989 to 1994. He was employed by Procter & Gamble Company from 1968 to November 1994. He served as Non-Executive Director of Neptune Orient Lines Limited from February 1, 2010 to June 10, 2016. He has been a Director of Agilent Technologies, Inc. since June 2000. Dr. Herbold is a Director of Browning-Ferris Industries, Inc. since 1998. He serves as a Director of First Mutual Bank, Indachin Ltd. and Vision Solutions, Inc. He served as Director of World Wide Packets Inc. Dr. Herbold served as a Director of First Mutual Bancshares Inc. since May 1, 2003. He served as a Director of Immunex Corporation since March 2001 and Terabeam Networks. He served as a Director of Weyerhaeuser Co., from 1999 to February 16, 2006 and Cintas Corp. from 2001 to January 24, 2006. He has been a Director of ICOS Corporation. since March 16, 2005. He serves as the President of The Herbold Foundation. He also is on the Board of Directors of the Information Technology Association of America and the Internet Policy Institute. He serves as a Member of the Board of Trustees of Case Western Reserve University, the Seattle Symphony and Overlake Hospital. He also is on the Board of Directors of the Information Technology Association of America and the Internet Policy Institute. He serves as a Trustee of The Seattle Foundation and University of Cincinnati Foundation. Dr. Herbold is a member of the board of The Heritage Foundation and the Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. He serves as a Member of Board of Overseers of The Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace at Stanford University and he is senior executive in residence at INSEAD. He served as Trustee and Member of the Board of Ambassadors at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. He served as a Director at Nanyang Technological University. From 2002 to 2009, he served as member of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. He is a Member of the Washington Roundtable, the James Madison Council of the Library of Congress and the Executive Council of TechNet. He is an Adjunct Professor in the Business School at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. Mr. Herbold’s experiences at Microsoft and Procter & Gamble were the basis of an article he authored in the January, 2002 issue of the Harvard Business Review entitled “Inside Microsoft: Balancing Discipline and Creativity”, which focuses on how companies can improve their profitability and agility. He authored a book titled The Fiefdom Syndrome; The Turf Battles that Undermine Careers and Companies – and How to Overcome Them in 2004, second book titled: Seduced by Success; How the Best Companies Survive the 9 Traps of Winning, In 200, third book titled What’s Holding You Back in February, 2011. Dr. Herbold holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science, a Master's Degree in Mathematic both from Case Western Reserve University and a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from the University of Cincinnati.
