Biography
Pieter Maeseele (PhD UGent) is Associate Professor at the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Antwerp. As a media sociologist, research and education focuses on the relationship between media and democracy , and more specifically on how to assess the image of social issues to the extent to which it contributes to democratic debate and citizenship. The focus is on news and journalism , and more specifically on how both professional and alternative forms of journalism talk about social issues and what we are talking about media pluralismin the 21st century. Current and previous research focuses on social issues relating to science and the environment on the one hand and political and economic developments on the other hand, such as climate change, the energy issue, savings policy and social protest, new political and social movements, ethical consumption, GMOs, etc. In addition, He also has experience in setting up media monitors with regard to social issues
