Dave De Ruysscher

Biography

Dave De ruysscher is associate professor at the Department of Public Law, Jurisprudence and Legal History at Tilburg University and associate professor at the Faculty of Law and Criminology of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). De ruysscher studied history (Leuven University, 2000) and law (University of Antwerp, 2004). In May 2009, he obtained a PhD-degree at Leuven University, on the commercial legislation and legal practice in the Antwerp law court in the late sixteenth and in the seventeenth centuries. In May 2013, his published PhD-thesis was awarded the five-yearly Prix Charles Duvivier (Académie royale de Belgique), and in December 2010, it was nominated for the five-yearly Frans Van Cauwelaert prize (Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium). Some of De ruysscher's journal articles have been awarded prizes as well. In August 2016, he was awarded a ERC Starting Grant, which concerns the history of securities and insolvency regulations in the Early Modern Period. Dave De ruysscher explores the history of commercial law on the European continent, and is interested in comparative law, civil law and legal methodology. He publishes regularly in Dutch, French and English, on early modern and modern dogmatics and legal practice relating to capability to sign contracts, financial instruments, marine insurance and bankruptcy. His historical interests lie in court practice, urban law and commercial practice in the early modern Netherlands, in particular in Antwerp and Amsterdam.
