Biography
Niels van Dijk is a lecturer in legal philosophy at the research group for Contextual Research in law (CORE) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussels (VUB) and at the law faculty of Saint-Louis University (FUSL). He is the author of the monograph “Grounds of the Immaterial. A Conflict-Based Approach to Intellectual Rightsâ€. Niels van Dijk further is a post-doctoral researcher at the Centre for Law Science Technology and Society (LSTS) on a fellowship granted by Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (FWO). He has participated in several national and European (FP 6 & 7) interdisciplinary research projects. His research focuses mainly on the challenges posed by new (digital) technologies to practices of law, especially in the fields of intellectual rights, privacy and data protection. Further fields of his interest include: legal theory, philosophy of science, science and technology studies (STS) and ethnography of legal institutions. He is also director and co-founder of the Brussels Laboratory for Privacy and Data Protection Impact Assessments (d.pia.lab). He holds a PhD degree in law by the VUB, and LLM and MA degrees in law and philosophy by the University of Amsterdam. In the past, he has been a visiting researcher at the law department of the London School of Economics and at the philosophy department of the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
Research Interest
His research focuses mainly on the challenges posed by new (digital) technologies to practices of law, especially in the fields of intellectual rights, privacy and data protection. Further fields of his interest include: legal theory, philosophy of science, science and technology studies (STS) and ethnography of legal institutions.
