He is holding bachelor's degree in Agronomy from Federal University of Viçosa (1988), master's degree in Agronomy from Federal University of Viçosa (1993) and doctorate in Genetic Agronomy and Improvement from University of Nebraska Lincoln (2004). Has experience in Biochemistry, focusing on Molecular Biology, acting on the following subjects: soybean, molecular markers, cyst nematode, genetic diversity and rapd.
