Biography

I joined IBM Research Brazil in February 2011 and since February 2012, I am leading the Natural Resources Analytics group at IBM Research Brazil. The group's mission is to conduct research projects in data-driven and physically-driven analytics, aiming to develop novel technologies that can help in smarter natural resources discovery and exploration. Since 2006, I am a professor at the Computer Science Department at Federal Fluminense University (UFF), Brazil, where I currently co-advise M.Sc. and Ph.D. students in the areas of machine learning and data mining. From 2008 to 2010, I worked as a researcher at ADDLabs-UFF, funded by Petrobras, in sensor data analysis for equipment monitoring. Before joining UFF, I was a Research Staff Member at the Data Analytics Research group at IBM T.J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, NY. Before that, I received a Ph.D. (2003) in Computer Science from the University of California, San Diego under the guidance of Professor Charles Elkan. My research interests lie in machine learning and data mining, more specifically: cost-sensitive learning, confidence estimation for learning model outputs, feature selection and learning with diverse data types, methods for dealing with missing and biased data in learning models. I am active in the machine learning and data mining research communities, having served in the editorial board of the Journal of Machine Learning Research (JMLR) and the Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery (DMKD) journal. I also serve in the program committees of the International Conference in Machine Learning (ICML), ACM International Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (ACM-KDD), and Simposio Brasileiro de Banco de Dados (SBBD), among others.
