Biography

Ulisses T. Mello is the Director of IBM Research – Brazil (BRL) with sites in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. He is an IBM Distinguished Engineer and he led the Smarter Natural Resources & Discovery area at BRL until 2012. Ulisses is also an IBM Global Research Executive for the Chemicals and Petroleum Industry sector. Prior to 2010, Ulisses was a researcher and manager of the Petroleum and Energy Analytics group in the Business Analytics and Mathematical Sciences dept. at IBM T. J. Watson Center in NY, USA, where he was responsible for the development of strategic thought leadership in Chemicals & Petroleum with focus on computational geosciences which intersects aspects of geology, geophysics, applied math, and computational sciences and addresses multi-scale geological processes, algorithms, methods and software design. Ulisses has more than 70 papers published in the literature, 16 patents, and he has chaired a number of technical of technical venues for the top conferences in the field. In 1998, he received the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) Wallace Pratt Award. He also received two Outstanding Accomplishments from IBM Research. He is a member of the Advisory Committee for the Research Consortium in Reservoir Simulation of University of Calgary, Schulich School of Engineering and part of the Technical Committee of the Reservoir Management and Production Optimization Program in the Center for e-field and integrated operations (IO) in Norway, led by Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). He is also part of the editorial board of “The Open Petroleum Engineering Journal” and serves on the board of the Hart Energy’s E&P Magazine. Ulisses holds a Ph.D. (1994) and M.A. (1992) in Geology from Columbia University, a M.Sc. in Geology from Federal University of Ouro Preto (1987), and B.Sc. (1983) in Geology from University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Prior to joining IBM, he worked for the Petrobras R&D and his research work was focused on the numerical modeling of geological process including large-scale fluid and heat flow within sedimentary basins for exploration risk assessment. His research interests are large-scale basin modeling, hydrogeological modeling, digital oil fields, integrated operation optimization, data assimilation, unstructured meshing, parallel computing, advanced water management, and computational geosciences. Ulisses is member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), American Meteorological Society (AMS) , American Geophysical Union (AGU), Brazilian Association of Petroleum Geologists (ABGP), European Association of Geoscientists & Engineers (EAGE), Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG), and New York Academy of Sciences. He is also a member of the IBM Academy of Technology and IBM Industry Academy. Ulisses T. Mello is the Director of IBM Research – Brazil (BRL) with sites in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
