Emílio Odebrecht

Biography

Mr. Emílio Alves Odebrecht was born in the state of Bahia on January 25,1945. He holds a degree in Civil Engineering from the Polytechnic School of the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) awarded in 1968. He joined Construtora Norberto Odebrecht (CNO) as a trainee in 1966, starting the process of harmonic and planned succession of his father, Norberto Odebrecht, as leader of the Odebrecht Group. He worked as a construction technical manager until 1972, and from 1973 to 1980 he was the superintendent for the South-Central subsidiaries, Vice President and later CEO for CNO. When the holding Odebrecht S.A. was created in 1981, he became its Vice President, in addition to being the CNO's CEO. Under his leadership, in the 1990s, Odebrecht went from investor to Brazilian leader in the petrochemical sector, holding interest in a conglomerate that was to become BRASKEM, currently the largest petrochemical company in the Americas, with plants in Brazil, the United States and Germany. It was also under Mr. Emílio Odebrecht's leadership that the company consolidated its international presence, represented by permanent operations in South America, Central America, the Caribbean and North America, Europe, Africa and the Middle East. In 1991, in one more step in the succession process, he replaced his father, Norberto Odebrecht, as Chief Executive Officer for Odebrecht S.A.. Completing this cycle, he became, in April 1998, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Odebrecht S.A., where he remains to date. Throughout his corporate history, he earned titles, medals and commendations granted by public and private, civil and military entities, in addition to government bodies, in recognition of Odebrecht's contribution to the economic and social development of the communities in which the company is present. Mr. Emílio Odebrecht has contributed to society by participating in various entities, such as the Brazilian National Confederation of Industry (CNI), the Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo (FIESP), the International Entrepreneurship Institute - Endeavor, the São Paulo Museum of Art (Masp) and the Odebrecht Foundation.
