Biography
José Antônio Martinelli is an Agricultural Engineer from the University of Passo Fundo (1982), with a Master's degree in Agronomy (Phytopathology) from ESALQ-USP (1986) and PhD in Phytopathology from the University of Cambridge, UK, one of the world and major academic centers. During his PhD, he was awarded the Wolfson College Junior Research Fellowship. At the Plant Beeding Institute, he learned from mentors such as Martin Wolfe and Roy Johnson the basics and principles of plant resistance to disease and epidemiology, with which he directed his scientific career from that time on. In 1991 he did a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Plant Sciences at Cambridge University and in 2001 a sabbatical year at the University of Minnesota. Since 1997 he is Professor at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), where he conducts research and courses related to plant pathology. He has published many articles, book chapters and has directed several masters and doctoral students. From 2005 to 2007, he assumed the coordination of the UFRGS Post-Graduation Program in Plant Science. In 2014 he was promoted to the position of Full Professor.
