Biography

Prof. Dr. Sterju Shterev is Head of the Department of Abdominal Surgery at the First Surgery Clinic. He graduated in Medicine in 1984 in Varna and received a degree in surgery in 1990. His professional experience began as a doctor of distribution since 1988 She works as a doctor - ordinator at the Regional Hospital - Varna. Since 2006 he has been in the current position. Associate Professor Shterev is one of the leading surgeons in the city and the region. It performs over 250 operations per year, including both hernia, hemorrhoids, gallstones, and complicated cases of colon and rectal cancer, stomach cancer. He is one of the few surgeons in the country who have gained extensive experience in oesophageal cancer and has the most advanced methods of surgical treatment. The team with his participation is one of the first in Bulgaria to introduce laparoscopic surgery. Even before the massive introduction of the mini-invasive surgery, Prof. Shterev performed laparoscopic holteystectomy. Later on, he introduced laparoscopic foundoplication in hiatal hernia and gastro-oesophageal reflux (GERB), the so- fundoplication. This surgery has been carried out since 2001, and at the First Surgery Clinic the greatest number of patients with hiatal hernia in Bulgaria - over 350 - has been operated. The excellent experience is found in his thesis "Modern Approach to Surgical Treatment of Hiatal hernias ". Prof. Shterev has an outstanding teaching activity, which started in 1990 as an assistant professor at the Department of Propedeutics of Surgical Diseases at Medical University - Varna. Passing through the positions of Senior and Chief Assistant, after successfully defended dissertation and a competition, Prof. Shterev became a habilitated lecturer at the Department of General and Operative Surgery. Associate Professor Shterev teaches students in medicine and post-graduate students.Survivors under his supervision successfully continue their careers as excellent specialists. The accumulated rich experience is described in a monographic work entitled "Hiatal hernia", published in 2014. She speaks Russian and English.
