Biography
I am a Professor in and former Director of the Jodrey School of Computer Science at Acadia University. I am currently the Director of the Acadia Institute for Data Analytics. My research focuses on machine learning and its application in data analytics, data mining, user modelling, and intelligent and adaptive systems. I teach related courses as well as courses on software engineering, web-centric programmning and the impact of computing on our environment and society. I was the President of the Canadian Artificiual Intellgence Association (CAIAC) from 2009-2011 and am now a member of the ChaLearn Board of Directors. In 2005, I founded the Acadia University Robot Programming Competitions and have been the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Partner for Nova Scotia since 2006. In 2011 I accepted Science Champion Award from the Nova Scotia Discovery Center on behalf of all the wonderful people at Acadia and the NSCC that I have had the pleasure to work with on youth robotics and the advancement of STEM education. In December, 2014, I became an Honorary Colonel in the RCAF attached to the 14 Wing Software Engineering Squadron, in Greenwood, NS.
Research Interest
My primary research interest is Machine Learning, a sub-area of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Machine Learning has become one of the most respected areas of AI being used commercially in Data Analytics, Data Mining, and Intelligent Agents. I also have interest in the following research areas:user modeling and adaptive user interfaces, handheld and wireless technology, robotics, knowledge management and web-centric application development. If you are a student at Acadia, I invite you to become a research associate with the Intelligent Information Technology Research Laboratory (IITRL), CAR 211. If you are external to Acadia but doing research in Machine Learning, I would encourage you to see our MLRL Group website and apply to become a contributor to the ML3 website.
