Biography
Helen Gurney-Smith has over ten years of experience in aquaculture research and is the scientific lead for the Shellfish Health and Husbandry Group in the Centre for Shellfish Research at Vancouver Island University. Her research program includes climate change (ocean acidification), pollutants (emerging concern and wastewater) and aquaculture species development using ecology and genomics tools for assessments of coastal ecosystem health and productivity. She is working with the BC Salmon Farmers Association to develop an environmental monitoring network in British Columbia, and has worked with the shellfish industry on a number of projects including genetic assessments of broodstock. She was formally trained in the UK and has a BSc, an MRes and a PhD with postdoctoral training in Ireland and Wales. She has been a member of the AAC since 2004.
