Dr. Justine Smith

Biography

Justine Smith is a graduate student from Harvard Divinity School, concentrating in New Testament, early Christian origins, and Native American studies. Her specialization is in biblical translation—theory and method. She has worked extensively in the treaty rights/Native sovereignty movements and within environmental, social justice, and women’s health organizations. Smith is currently teaching with the North American Institute for Indigenous Theological Institute (NAIITS) and pastors the Norman First American United Methodist Church in Oklahoma. She previously served as pastor of the Native American Ministry of the United Methodist Church in Chicago, and was youth minister of the Native American Ministry in Milwaukee. Smith has served as a translator and a consultant for the Signifying Scriptures Project and is a member of the Society of Biblical Literature’s Committee on Underrepresented Racial and Ethnic Minorities. She is the author of several articles on Native rights and Native biblical hermeneutics. Smith received her MDiv from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary.
