Research Interest
I am Manager of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry’s (FOMD) Cell Imaging Centre, a core imaging facility. I provide microscopy expertise and resources for research staff within the FOMD. Eventually housed in the basement of the Katz building, the current centre is a decentralised collection of microscopes. My aim is to get researchers to see images in a new light. Instead of seeing the image, I would like microscopists to see the numbers underlying the image, to take advantage of the quantitative nature of modern fluorescence microscopy. Prior to joining the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology, I was head of optical microscopy for A*STAR’s Institute of Medical Biology in Singapore for 3 years. I have extensive experience in cell biology, molecular biology, imaging, and tissue culture and the integration of these techniques in a workflow to produce quantitative images from optical microscopes. I also believe that microscopy is not a technique performed in isolation, rather, as part of a larger program encompassing complementary techniques to answer research questions. My current research interests are developing solutions for imaging biological specimens in 3D at high temporal and spatial resolutions. I also search for new fluorescent optical techniques that give rise to unusual acronyms such as those currently in use for a variety of fluorescent techniques (e.g. TIRF, FRAP, FRET, FLIP, FLIM, etc.). Additionally, as a corollary of providing microscopy services in the digital age, I must strive to find useful means o storing/indexing/retrieving the ever increasing number of images that researchers accumulate using microscopy as their main research technique.
