Biography
Mr. Stephen W. Bowman serves as the Toronto Managing Partner at Bennett Jones LLP. Mr. Bowman served at Bennett Jones LLP in the position of Office Managing Partner since February 2007, and Prior to this he was a partner. Mr. Bowman’s practice includes corporate finance, trans-border transactions, emissions-trading transactions and estate planning. Mr. Bowman has experience both with domestic and cross-border transactions involving aircraft, rail equipment, large plant facilities and technology in a wide range of jurisdictions. Mr. Bowman’s practice also encompasses estate planning, having advised a wide range of Canadian domestic and foreign clients in connection with the establishment, operation and reorganization of estate planning structures. He is an active member of the Tax Committee of the Canadian Finance & Leasing Association. He served on the consultative committee established by the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants in connection with the reform of Canadian accounting standards applicable to securitization transactions. He is treasurer and a member of the Council of the Canadian Branch of the International Fiscal Association and has served as a Canadian National Reporter for the Association. Mr. Bowman has taught at the Bar Admission Course of the Law Society of Upper Canada and speaks and writes extensively on corporate finance, government collection remedies and estate planning. He served for a number of years as co-editor of the Current Cases feature of the Canadian Tax Journal. He is currently a contributing editor to Corporate Finance, published by Federated Press. Mr. Bowman was the 2003 recipient of the Canadian Tax Foundation's Douglas J. Sherbaniuk Distinguished Writing Award for “Non-Resident Trusts Update: Living with the New Section 94.”
