Biography
Roelof Makken is Adjunct Professor of Finance at the Goodman School of Business. He holds a BA in Economics and BAdmin in Finance from Brock University, and a MA in Economics from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium). After six years in corporate and investment banking, he returned to Leuven to work on a PhD (incomplete). It was a conducive environment to work on some ideas and models that originated from his work experience. The modelling pursuit turned out to be the perfect segue back to the world of high finance and corporate advisory. Concentrations in his studies were International-Monetary Economics, Econometrics and Financial Markets. Mr. Makken teaches courses on Macro Economics, Economics of the Multinational Enterprise and Portfolio Management & Alternative Assets at both undergraduate and graduate levels. He was the recipient of the 2009 Clarke Thomson Award for Excellence in Sessional Teaching at Brock.
Research Interest
Mr. Makken's research areas include interest rate yield curves, foreign exchange markets, monetary policy and financial risk. During the past fifteen years, a specific interest developed in the area of how a comprehensive development of a strong natural resource sector (incl. financing approaches and stakeholder engagement) can be a critical success factor for sustainable economic and social development of (developing) countries.
