The 27km circumference Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will bring protons into collision at an energy of 14 TeV which is an energy that is equivalent to 14,000 times the mass of a hydrogen atom. I work on the ATLAS experiment which is one of four large detectors being assembled around the LHC beam line to observe and analyze these energetic events. ATLAS is a general purpose detector designed to explore the physics from these energetic events. I have worked with the 1800 other physicists on ATLAS to build components for this experiment. Two FCal detectors were built in the basement of this building and these calorimeter modules are now sitting in a cryostat in the pit at CERN being readied for next year's data taking. I am working with my colleagues and students to look at possible physics signal from ATLAS.
