Joshua Marshall

Biography

Dr. Marshall’s research focuses on mining systems and involves the development and application of advanced methods for perception, modelling, and control of mining equipment and processes.  Recent examples include robotic mapping and vehicle positioning, multivehicle coordination, and autonomous vehicle technologies for mining and planetary applications.  His objective is to foster inventive yet practical ways for realizing low-cost, high-output, inherently safe, and environmentally responsible mining and exploration operations.  An important aspect of this effort is the problem of closely integrating new methods with mine planning and design.  Beyond traditional mining, Dr. Marshall also has a keen interest in planetary (space) and extreme-environments mining research. Dr. Marshall joined the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Queen’s as an Assistant Professor on May 1, 2010.  He received the B.Sc.(Hons.) degree in mining engineering and the M.Sc.(Eng.) degree in mechanical engineering, both from Queen’s University, Kingston, ON.  He received the Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering, with a specialty in systems control, from the University of Toronto, Toronto, ON.  Over the course of his career, Dr. Marshall has worked on equipment automation and robotics-related R&D projects together with several companies, agencies, and institutes, including Barrick Gold Corporation, MDA Space Missions, Atlas Copco, Phelps Dodge, the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), the UT Institute for Aerospace Studies, Sandvik Mining and Construction, and Inco Ltd.’s Mines Research Department.  He holds twopatents related to mining machine automation.  Prior to joining Queen’s, he was a tenure-track Assistant Professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at Carleton University in Ottawa, ON and an R&D Engineer on both space and terrestrial robotics programs at MDA Space Missions of Brampton, ON.  He continues to actively serve as a technical resource for industry partners.  Dr. Marshall is a member of the CIM, IEEE, SME, and is a licensed Professional Engineer in the province of Ontario.
