Joseph W. St. Geme Iii

Biography

 Dr. Joseph W. St. Geme is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for CommenSe. Dr. St. Geme is also the Physician-in-Chief and Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and the Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn). He completed a pediatric residency and chief residency at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.  Subsequently, he pursued postdoctoral training in microbiology and infectious diseases at Stanford University, working in the laboratory of Stanley Falkow and receiving clinical training at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital.  In 1992 he joined the faculty at Washington University School of Medicine as a member of the Department of Pediatrics and the Department of Molecular Microbiology, where he remained for 13 years.  In 2005 he was recruited to Duke University Medical Center to serve as Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics and Chief Medical Officer of Duke Children’s Hospital.  In 2013, he relocated to Philadelphia to assume responsibilities at CHOP and UPenn.  Dr. St. Geme has an active laboratory research program that focuses on host-pathogen interactions involving pathogenic bacteria.  The primary emphasis of his laboratory has been Haemophilus influenzae, a leading cause of childhood morbidity and mortality worldwide.  A more recent major focus in his laboratory is Kingella kingae, an emerging pathogen that is being recognized increasingly as a cause of bone and joint infections in young children.  Dr. St. Geme has authored over 230 publications and has received a number of awards for his research accomplishments, including a March of Dimes Basil O’Connor Award, an American Heart Association Established Investigator Award, the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society Young Investigator Award, and the Infectious Diseases Society of America Squibb Award.  In recognition of his academic achievements, he has been elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the Association of American Physicians, the American Academy of Microbiology, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Institute of Medicine/National Academy of Medicine.  He is a committed clinician who attends regularly on the pediatric wards at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and has been cited by Best Doctors in America for over 10 years.  In addition, he is a passionate educator and has received teaching awards from medical students, residents, and graduate students. Dr. St. Geme received his bachelor’s degree from Stanford University and his medical degree from Harvard Medical School.
