Biography
Katherine is an Associate Professor of Communication Design in the Faculty of Design + Dynamic Media. She joined Emily Carr in 2013 after 11 years in the UK, where she worked in the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication at the University of Reading. Her PhD, completed in 2008, focuses on meaning in graphic language, mainly in book design and diagrammatic representation. Katherine's work in information design and book design has covered a range of topics including complex text design and analysis, diagrammatic representation, and lettering in the built environment. Current research and design work includes investigations into the 'fuzzy messes' embodied by environmental issues such as climate change and energy consumption, as well as how design and visualization can contribute to curriculum development. She is active in journalistic design writing and is a committee member of the Information Design Association.
