Biography
Dr. Caroline Heffernan (B.Sc, Ag, DVM) grew up on a beef farm near Norwood Ontario. She knew she wanted to be a veterinarian in grade 2. Caroline attended the University of Guelph where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture with a major in Animal Science. Caroline was a member of the Gryphon Varsity Hockey Team and the College Royal Celebrant. Sports was always a key part of growing up in her family. Caroline then completed her Veterinary degree at the Ontario Veterinary College. A keen interest in horses lead her to spend time working on Standardbred and Thoroughbred farms while studying at OVC as well as working in the Large Animal Clinic. After graduating from OVC, Caroline went to work in Hamilton at Mountain Animal Hospital, where she was part of a wonderful team for 11 yrs. Caroline's husband's work brought them to their second home in Calgary. Caroline worked at Okotoks Animal Clinic for 11 yrs before coming to Fish Creek Pet Hospital. Caroline is married to George Shelswell and they have two Australian cattle dogs named Bubba and Junior, and three cats. They also raise Red Angus cattle and have eight quarter horses on their farm near Mossleigh. Caroline's interests include barrel racing, running, gardening and spending time with family. A secret dream was to be an Olympic Athlete on the track. A horse accident four years ago prevents Caroline from doing surgery. She loves getting to know her clients and their pets. Preventive health is a passion and learning how to solve medical problems keeps veterinary life exciting.
