Biography

Stephen J. Griggs, B.A., J.D. serves as the Chief Executive Officer, General Counsel and Secretary of Smoothwater Capital Corporation. Mr. Griggs has been the Interim Chief Executive Officer at Genesis Land Development Corp. since February 17, 2016 and has been its Chairman of the Board since August 30, 2013. He served as Chief Executive Officer of Underwood Capital Partners Inc. He served as the Chief Operating Officer BPI Financial Corporation. He served as Chief Operating Officer at AIC Limited. He served as the President and Chief Executive Officer at The OPSEU Pension Trust from June 1, 2011 to April 2012. He was responsible for administrative and investment operations. Prior to joing OPTrust in mid-2011, he was Corporate/Commercial Partner at Gowling WLG International Limited (alternate name Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP). He was Partner and Chairman at Investeco Capital Corp. He joined Investeco Capital as a Partner on June 23, 2008. He served as the President and Chief Executive Officer at Legg Mason Canada Inc. from January 2003 to June 2007. He served as an Executive Director at Canadian Coalition for Good Governance. He is one of Canada's leading corporate governance experts with extensive senior executive experience in the investment management industry and is also a corporate lawyer. He has been the Chairman of the Board at Equity Financial Holdings Inc. since May 28, 2014. He serves the Chair of Equity Financial Trust Company. Mr. Griggs served as Vice Chair of Equity Financial Trust Company. He served as Vice Chairman at Equity Financial Holdings Inc. until May 28, 2014. He has been a Director of Marquee Energy Ltd. since December 6, 2016. He serves as a Director of Legg Mason Canada Inc. He has been an Independent Director at Equity Financial Holdings Inc. since February 26, 2014; Genesis Land Development Corp. since August 30, 2013 and Greater Toronto Airports Authority since January 27, 2010. He is a Corporate and Commercial Lawyer. He is an active corporate director and on the board of several charitable organizations. He is a dedicated community leader. He serves as Director of Healthy Minds Canada, the Ontario Board of the Nature Conservancy of Canada, The Ojibway Historical Preservation Society and the St. Patrick's Benevolent Society of Toronto. Mr. Griggs served as a Director of the Investment Funds Institute of Canada. He is an active writer and commentator about Canadian corporate governance matters. He holds a BA in Commerce and Economics and a JD from the University of Toronto.
