Biography
Bryan Watts has over 40 years’ experience in geotechnical engineering in tailings, hydroelectric and water dam design and construction in Canada and abroad. Bryan’s professional background includes construction monitoring, field investigations, design engineering, project management, third party reviews, and participation on review boards for a wide variety of projects. He was part of the forensic investigation teams for the Omai, Los Frailes, Mount Polley, and Fundão tailings dam failures. He sits on Tailings Review Boards for many mining companies, and has been invited to speak at several engineering conferences. Bryan’s career with KCB spans over 35 years. He started with the company in 1980 as a geotechnical engineer. He then managed the Geotechnical Division and was named Vice President of the Mining Environmental Group. He was the company’s President and CEO from 2006 to 2013, and has been Chairman of the board since 2012. Bryan is Past-President of the Canadian Geotechnical Society. In 2014, he received the Vancouver Geotechnical Society Award. In 1997, he received the Engineering Institute of Canada Fellowship for excellence in engineering and services to the profession and society. Also, in recognition of his significant engineering contribution at the international level, he was presented with the Engineering Institute of Canada’s K.Y. Lo Medal in 2016. Bryan holds a B.A.Sc. (1974) in Geological Engineering from UBC and a M.Sc. in Civil Engineering (1981) from the University of Alberta. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in British Columbia and Alberta.
