Biography
She was born with the taste of the image and, to the great displeasure of her parents, Estelle Lebel enrolled at the Beaux-Arts after a classical Latin-Greek course. After her bachelor's degree, she joined the NFB where she directed animated films until the day when a subject that was a bit too feminist disturbed her colleagues. Back then to university and reflection on his works of fiction. His mastery gives him a new understanding of the role of image in learning and leads him to Haiti. There she designed educational booklets - only in pictures - to teach people how to harvest mangoes for export, raise chickens, fish and test drinking water. It is a doctoral scholarship that brings Estelle Lebel back to Montreal. It then develops a field of expertise in its infancy, visual rhetoric, comparing and decrypting the image of the same slogan by ten posters. She has no time to drop her doctorate and is engaged in the Department where she devotes her career to deepening knowledge about communication through images, from the double point of view of semiology and sociology. Her basic research work is complemented by a work of education in images, which is embodied in works of general popularization such as My Child in front of the screen, published by the Ministry of Culture and Communications. While Estelle Lebel is a pioneer in her reading of image discourse, she is equally so in the sphere of feminist studies, in which she analyzes gender-based representations, practices and reception. She has been director of the feminist research magazine for seven years.
