Biography
Jim Gallagher is Executive Vice President, General Counsel of Manulife Financial overseeing the global law, compliance, internal audit and corporate secretary functions. He is a member of Manulife’s Executive Committee and Global Leadership Team. Prior to his current role Mr. Gallagher was Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Chief Administrative Officer for the US Division. He was responsible for John Hancock’s legal and compliance operations. As Chief Administrative Officer, he was also responsible for other functions including John Hancock’s Government, Public and Community Relations as well as Brand Management and Sponsorship Marketing. Before taking on this role in 2012, he had been Executive Vice President and Global Compliance Chief for Manulife since 2005. In that role, he managed the legal and compliance staff responsible for an array of compliance requirements facing the company globally. Previously, Jim served as General Counsel to Manulife USA and was President of John Hancock Investment Trust. Before joining Manulife in Boston in 1994, Jim was Vice President and Associate General Counsel for the Canadian Operations of Prudential Insurance Company of America and also served as Assistant General Counsel with Prudential at its Newark, NJ, headquarters. He is the Chair of the Board of Trustees for Catholic Charities of Boston, was the founding President of One Fund Boston, serves on the Board of Directors and is the Co-chair of the Financial Services Committee for the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce. Also, Jim is on the Deputies Committee as well as the Steering Committee on Retirement and Financial Security for the American Council of Life Insurers. Jim graduated with a B.A in Political Science from St. Michael’s College, University of Toronto and later earned a J.D from Ohio Northern University’s College of Law.
