Biography
Dr. Annmarie Adams holds the Stevenson Chair in the History & Philosophy of Science, including Medicine. An architect and architectural historian by training, she is jointly appointed in the Department of Social Studies of Medicine and the Peter Guo-hua Fu School of Architecture in the Faculties of Medicine and Engineering. Her research explores the architectural history of medicine: healthy homes, hospitals, longterm care, palliative care, surgical environments, mental health clinics, and a host of ordinary places that touch on gender or wellness. She is currently working on Wilder Penfield’s surgical environments and a book project on the medical museum movement. Her research has garnered numerous awards, including the Jason Hannah Medal from the Royal Society of Canada, a CIHR Health Career Award, a YWCA Woman of Distinction prize, and most recently, the Christophe Pierre Award for Research Excellence. She has held research funds from CIHR, the Hannah Institute for the History of Medicine, SSHRC, Heritage Canada, and the Australian Research Council. Her work has been featured in the New York Times, Nature, Elle, and many other media outlets.
