David Grimes

Biography

"Dr. Grimes received his Doctorate in Medicine (Cum Laude) and completed his residency in Neurology at the University of Ottawa. He then spent two years (1997 to 1999) at the Toronto Hospital and the Centre for Research in Neurodegenerative Diseases as a research fellow in movement disorders and molecular genetics. He joined the Department of Medicine in Ottawa in 1999 and is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Ottawa and an Associate Scientist at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. His clinician and research interests are focused on improving our understanding and treatment of a wide variety of movement disorders with an emphasis on Parkinson’s disease. He is the Director of the Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorder Clinic at The Ottawa Hospital and is recognized as a national expert in movement disorders having been the project leader and editor of the Canadian Guidelines on Parkinson’s Disease published in 2012. He has authored more than 60 peer reviewed publications on movement disorders, book chapters and two books dedicated to the treatment and care of individuals with Parkinson’s disease. He has received funding to support his clinical and basic research projects from the CIHR, NIH, Michael J. Fox Foundation, Parkinson Society Canada, Dystonia Medical Research Foundation and the Myoclonus Research Foundation. He just received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition for his work from the Parkinson Society Canada. He has fostered collaborations with scientists in the Ottawa region and is the co-director of the Parkinson’s Research Consortium that has raised over $2,500,000 to fund local Parkinson research."
